Gertrude Palmer

Recently released Farmer's Market series was acquired today by the Hardeeville, SC Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber sponsors the Farmer & Artisans Market on HWY 278 where artist Gertrude Palmer paints and sells her work. The paintings feature vendors at the market including Crumbs a specialty custom baker, Lee Bees , producer of natural honey based products, and dancer/Jeweler Yahni, a young elementary student who creates colorful wearable trinkets and hats.

Prep sketch Like stretching before you jog, gesture painting is a warm up exercise. Get the essence of the subject in 5 minutes or less. The technique preserves the animation of a quick study and often translates to a finished paintng. People enjoy watching a sketch session so much that, I started offering them at events like weddings and receptions. A step above caricatures, these are works of art. Members of the press have written articles on my "performance art" and sharing my work with the public is a reprieve from my sometimes lonely studio. Being a social person, this is one of the things I love best about being an artist. Producing the very personal work of portraiture is a gift. Raamy & Steve: What I love about your picture is the Gestalt or Gertstalt (ala Steve) What I love about the picture which maybe I can articulate better is the broad brush strokes that make a delicate image.  It has a big impact on me. Gert's reply to Raamy & Steve: What a wonderful thing to say. I have succeeded then! I am glad you are moved by my painting. I never thought of it as Gestalt, and I like that descriptor, but I often think of them as gestures or gestural (a relation to gestalt?). Gesture Painting is a calisthenic exercise in drawing the figure, meant to capture the essence in a few quick strokes. I have done a lot of it painting on site or ala prima as they call it. Of course, Red Dress is more involved or not so quick. But it is very important to me to keep that original essence.
